It is situated between Yeniköy and Emirgan on the northwestern coast of the Bosphorus, within the district of Sarıyer. A petty bay is also among the things that make İstinye a preferred place to visit.

In classical antiquity, it was the site of a town called Lasthenes, corrupted to Sosthenion in the Middle Ages. The area was the site of the Michaelion, a famed church, and monastery committed to St. Michael in Byzantine times.

The headquarters of the Istanbul Stock Exchange is situated in İstinye since 1995.
